A Nation of Friends
Last year, over 1. 1 million of our close friends dropped by and bought something from Musician’s Friend. That’s a bigger population than over 80 different countries. A republic of musicians. A nation of friends. As you’ll find in many other nations, the “citizens” of Musician’s Friend not only share a lot in common, they also have a rich cultural diversity that keeps things interesting. So this month, our column is a kind of “State of the Union,” a quick portrait of the plural “you,” pulled from surveys of our 10,000-person customer panel and from other research studies we did last year. You’re a multitalented tribe. On average, you play six instruments. As you’d expect, electric and acoustic guitar, bass, keyboards, and drums top the list (in that order). About 10% are DJs, uke players, or mandolinists. There’s a large coalition of band and orchestral instrument players. Some rare birds too: .69% play bagpipes and .59% play the lute. (Hmm . . . interesting duet possibilities?) You take what you do quite seriously. Incredibly, over 40%
have been playing for more than 30 years (most started
early in life). Over half of you say you play more today than
at any other point in your lives, and that your skills are
improving. And while only 24% of you make some or all
of your living through music, another 40% aspire to.
In general, you’re not shy. About half of you describe yourselves
as vocalists (though half of that number say you sound more like
Bob Dylan than Sting). About 70% get up in front of a live audience
at least once a year. Almost 40% have played on radio or TV at
least once. And only 20% admit to having serious stage fright.
Most of you have open minds and eclectic musical tastes.
In fact, 70% of you agree that you “listen to all genres of music.”
Classic Rock is the most popular genre, though Alternative
follows close behind. 10% are into Christian/religious music.
And when it comes to favorite artists, it’s all over the map:
one survey turned up 500 different answers ranging from The
Beatles to Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. And for what it’s worth,
74% of you would rather have lunch with Bruce Springsteen
than Lady GaGa.
Finally, you’re a nation of softies. Music makes you all warm
and emotional. According to a study we conducted in November
2011, 77% admit that a song has moved you to tears. (There,
there. You’re not alone. We need industrial-grade Kleenex
whenever we hear Death Cab’s “I Will Follow You Into The Dark”
or bagpipes playing “Danny Boy.” Without the lute.)
